Instapaper gets highlights

For the past few months we've been working hard on a feature a whole lot of you requested: highlights. Today, we're happy to announce that we've shipped text highlighting…

This is pretty nifty. One of the things that interested me about quote.fm was the easy grabbing of a quote from the article that you could use to share the link. I like this primarily because I have trouble coming up with interesting text to put alongside someone else’s much more interesting article.

It’s particularly easy to share if you turn on automatic sharing of highlights to Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr. I’ve had a bit of a play and I have but a few niggles:

  • Posting to Twitter uses a j.mp link. Why? I have no wish to hide the true nature of the URL from everyone.
  • Posting to Twitter is fraught, because you don’t see how many characters your quote is.[1] At the moment I’m just going to avoid it.
  • Facebook sharing is much nicer: the URL is correct and of course there’s no character limit. Quotation marks are automatically added to your post… but they’re not curly! Shocking!
  • Tumblr sharing uses the obvious “quote” type which works well. The URL has the quotation added to the end of it, for reasons that were unclear to me… until I read about Fragmentions, which seem pretty cool.

  1. Well, you can count manually of course, but I don’t particularly care to. ↩︎
